I am not one for superstitions (okay, well maybe when it comes to knocking on wood), but my experience on Friday the thirteenth this year has me thinking. Delphine and Chloe were over for a play date and the girls were having a great time playing in Juliet's room and Delphine and I were chatting. Juliet pointed to my nose, and I played along saying, "that's mommy's nose". The next thing I knew she had jabbed me in the eye. I didn't see it coming, so there was no time to flinch. It was extremely painful and a rather scary experience. Thankfully Delphine was there to keep an eye on Juliet (since she still had 2 good eyes!) while we tried to figure out what I should do and who I should call. In the end I went to the optometrists down the street, For Your Eyes Only, for an emergency Friday evening visit (Dr. Lukens is my hero).
In my frazzled state, I forgot my sunglasses, so I staggered over there holding my eye like a total spaz. It turned out I had a scratch on my cornea 5 mm long and 0.25 mm wide, just about the entire exposed width of my eye. The numbing drops were worth the trip down the street and the 44 bucks. I went home, took a biggy Motrin from childbirth recovery, then slept for 12 hours. The next morning I was much better and by that afternoon my eye was barely bothering me at all. Ah, the joy of small children. Once my eye was better, I gave Juliet's nails a trim.
